My first time traveling to Africa and visiting several historical sites left me with a profound desire to return and reconnect. As a Black American woman, my connection to my roots becomes difficult to trace before my Great Grandfather.
However, standing at the Slave River, feeling the sand between my toes being washed away by the crisp waters on ancient burial ground. I was moved and felt in my spirit that I was standing on the same land my ancestors once touched. It was a connection to my roots I had never known. That experience awakened something in me. Since then, Ghana has called me back.
On my second trip, I focused on cultural immersion and giving back to the children in any way I could. It was during that journey that my heart truly opened to Ghana and its people. I began to feel a curiosity to explore other African Diaspora cultures around the world. It was then I started to dream of a way to combine three things I love—travel, experiencing culture, and giving back.
From that dream, Journey With Purpose was born.
